After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer midway through a national tour earlier this year, Candy Royalle is in recovery and planning her return to the stage in Frida People.

Driven by a newfound appreciation for the fragility of life, Royalle has teamed up with improv-funk trio Sloppy Joe and the “grotesque burlesque” showgirl Betty Grumble. Together, they have sought to create a multi-sensory performance that expolres the unpredictability and arbitary nature of the human condition.

The mish-mash of performance, poetry, dance and experimental funk serves an appropriate platform for this entertainingly confronting inquiry. Constantly disjointed and random, each element of the show works in unison to strengthen its accessibility and highlight the underlying themes of human connectivity and questioned beleifs.

Catch Frida People at the Seymour Centre on Thursday November 20, Thursday November 27 and Thursday December 4.
