Assassin’s Creed Infinity has been revealed by Ubisoft and the future of the series seems to be… all online. The fans are gonna love this.

Do you love Assassin’s Creed games? How about live-service offerings like Destiny and Fortnite. Well then today’s your lucky day, friendo, because that seems to be exactly what you’re getting with Assassin’s Creed Infinity.

Originally leaked via Bloomberg, the game was later properly announced by Ubisoft via a rather lengthy blog post. We’ll level with you, there is a hell of a lot of fluff in said post, so here’s a bit of a snippet.

“The pandemic and working from home have fundamentally changed the way we produce games, giving us a moment to reflect on our organization. Assassin’s Creed was born within the walls of Ubisoft Montreal and the studio built an incredible foundation for the franchise with the immense skill and creativity of its teams before Ubisoft Quebec then took the lead with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Odyssey, demonstrating its ability to drive the franchise even further.

Rather than continuing to pass the baton from game to game, we profoundly believe this is an opportunity for one of Ubisoft’s most beloved franchises to evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner that’s less centred on studios and more focused on talent and leadership, no matter where they are within Ubisoft.”

See what we mean?

While Ubisoft is waxing lyrical about the focus on its team, the Bloomberg report provides the real meat and potatoes of what you can expect. According to unnamed sources, Infinity will exist as a huge online platform that will gradually evolve over the years following its release.

So while last years’ Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was all about Viking expansion into the the British Isles, Infinity could tackle multiple locations that all are connected, even if they look and a feel a little different from one another. Maybe we’ll finally be able to get a damn entry set in Japan.

What we don’t know exactly is how Ubisoft plans on prying your cold hard cash from your wallet. Will Infinity be a subscription model? Will each new update come with a one-time cost? Or will we fall into an endless pit of micro transactions as we buy an endless supply of funny hats.

The answer to that may still be some ways off, but we’ll have to wait and see before we get too worried about the franchise’s future.
