1. The First Song I Wrote

I remember writing and recording a song on a 4-track tape recorder when I was about 14 with a baglama (a Turkish guitar) and one of my Dad’s synths. I can’t remember the title or the words, but I do know it had an epic string synth part. It just kept going one note higher [each time] for about 20 minutes while I strummed some chords. [Laughs.] I...

Bringing those good ol’ country feels right into the city, Sydney’s own The Morrisons harness a wickedly fun and cheeky spirit in their self-titled album, an all-out assault of banjo, harmonica, fiddle and washboard.

Effortlessly sliding between fast-picking numbers like ‘Whiskey On The Brain’ and ‘Sugarcane’ – featuring some furious puffing on a harmonica...

Legend has it that the outlandishly entertaining All Our Exes Live In Texas do not, in fact, hail from Sydney, but instead have their origin on a distant mountaintop, where they survived in a cave for eight eremitic years.

We recorded it on our EP, and we still play it live on occasions.

2.  The Last Song I...

1. Growing Up

I spent my formative years listening to ’70s funk and ’80s hip hop, working on my breakdancing. Unfortunately we’re yet to work that into The Morrisons, although it may possibly work with a banjo breakdown.

2. Inspirations

Hank Williams, Old Crow and Paul Kelly, because they’re the best.

Next week marks the re-emergence of the Lewisham Hotel on Sydney's live music scene.

They're throwing a Rock'N'Roll Re-launch Party with Front End Loader, Chase The Sun, The Lazys and The Morrisons, covering all rockin' bases and making a grand statement: rock'n'roll will never die. Sydney stalwarts FEL are fast approaching their 25 years together – doesn't time fly? – and we...
