At last, the world’s biggest video site is set to support live streaming of TV channels, with YouTube TV set to launch in 2017.
Speculation about a YouTube television streaming service has been rife in the tech industry for some time, and a YouTube blog announcement overnight confirmed the news everyone’s been waiting for.
YouTube TV promises live, cable-free streaming from more than 40 American networks, plus a cloud DVR with no storage limits.
Streaming channels will includeABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, regional sports networks and more, which means NBA and MLB fans will be able to follow their teams live on multiple devices.
“There’s no question that people love TV, from live sports to breaking news to sitcoms and dramas,” the announcement said.
“But the truth is, there are a lot of limitations in how to watch TV today. Unlike online video, people can’t watch TV when they want, on any screen and on their terms, without commitments. Consumers have made it clear that they want live TV without all the hassle.
“Meet YouTube TV. It’s live TV designed for the YouTube generation—those who want to watch what they want, when they want, how they want, without commitments.”
The service is priced at US$35 a month, and is soon to be available in the larger US markets. Any plans to launch in Australia and overseas are yet to be announced, but that sort of thing hasn’t stopped us before, has it?
