The NSW Young Liberals, a breeding ground for the conservative politicians of tomorrow, have spoken out against the State Government’s controversial lockout laws.

While the Young Liberals organisation has traditionally been a home for significantly right-wing policies and lobbying, it is set to break ranks with Gladys Berejiklian’s government at the Liberal Party Federal Council meeting in Sydney this weekend, the SMH reports.

The Sydney CBD lockout laws, introduced by Premier Barry O’Farrell in 2014 and championed by his successor, Mike Baird, have recently been relaxed for eligible venues by a mere 30 minutes, allowing premises to grant entry until 2am and serve drinks until 3:30am.

However, NSW Young Liberals president Alex Dore told the SMH this change does not go far enough.

“When we have a Liberal government introducing a nanny state solution – that seems to be shifting violence rather than totally abating it – people get frustrated,” he said.

“There has been a groundswell of opinion among our members because our movement is one that believes in small government, individual responsibility and more freedom.

“This is an opportunity for the state government to clear the barnacles of the previous government.”
