Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival: Silke Eberhard (DEU) with the Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective
Two-time DownBeat International Critics Poll Rising Star – Alto Saxophone, winner of the 2015 annual German Record Critics Award, Berlin free jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and composer, Silke Eberhard, has been making her mark on the international jazz world for some time and is making her first ever trip to Australia for the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival!
In a truly festive double bill/collaboration, Silke plays with ten-piece powerhouse, the Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective. Formed in 2016 and including several past winners of the prestigious Jann Rutherford Memorial Award, the Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective is led by bassist Hannah James and trumpeter Ellen Kirkwood (2017 Freedman Fellowship Finalist), and last year engaged in a special international collaboration with Canadian jazz stars Chrstine and Ingrid Jensen.
In the first set on Wednesday and Thursday, the Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective perform their own triumphant interpretations of the Australian works they focus on (Andrea Keller, Jenna Cave, Glenn Doig, Ellen Kirkwood) as well as pieces newly commissioned by the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival!
In the second set of each evening, Silke and the Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective join together to perform Silke’s own compositions at scale with their ten-piece band. Some of Silke’s music falls on the free jazz/improvised end of the spectrum, while records such as her trio album Mingus Mingus Mingus focus on the more traditional jazz canon. This will be a true festival experience!
