Community venues around the city are set to open as free rehearsal spaces for young musicians and performers as part of the City of Sydney’s new initiative to boost the live music and performance sector.

Under the City of Sydney’s recently adopted Live Music and Performance Action Plan, nine town halls and community centres will be available for free hire by primary school high school, university and TAFE students seeking a rehearsal space for music, theatre, dance and other forms of performance.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said in a statement that the initiative would help encourage creativity around the city. “As more Sydneysiders move into apartments and our population becomes more dense, it’s increasingly hard for musicians and performers to find suitable spaces to play and rehearse,” she said.

It’s more great news for the Sydney music scene, after the council announced the opening of Glebe Town Hall as the city’s newest live music venue.

The nine venues available as rehearsal spaces are:

Millers Point – Abraham Mott Hall and Harry Jensen Centre;
Potts Point – Rex Centre and Reginald Murphy Centre;
Redfern – Ron Williams Community Centre and Redfern Town Hall;
Zetland – The Tote and Green Square Community Hall;
Alexandria – Alexandria Town Hall and Cliff Noble Centre;
St Peters – Sydney Park Pavilion;
Erskineville – Joseph Sargeant Community Centre and Erskineville Town Hall;
Camperdown – Booler Community Centre; and
Glebe – Glebe Town Hall, Peter Forsyth Auditorium and St Helen’s Community Centre.
