The Australian Music Prize is one step closer to announcing the best Australian album of 2016.

The 12th AMP is set to be awarded in March, with $30,000 in prize money going to the winner courtesy PPCA. Now, the 16 AMP judges have revealed their shortlist of nine albums in the running, whittled down from 364 new releases in 12 months.

The shortlist is:

A.B. Original – Reclaim Australia

The Avalanches – Wildflower

Big Scary – Animal

Camp Cope – Camp Cope

D.D Dumbo – Utopia Defeated

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard – Nonagon Infinity

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds – Skeleton Tree

Olympia – Self Talk

The Peep Tempel – Joy

The 12th AMP will be awarded on Wednesday March 8.
