Jobs Internship Guidelines

After listening to feedback from our customers and users, we have created a set of internship guidelines to help our customers get the best experience out of The Brag Jobs. This is to help you navigate the Fair Work Australia guidelines and to avoid posting an opportunity that could be misconstrued as a violation of the Fair Work Act. If you think we’ve missed something, please drop us a line at [email protected].

Definition of an Intern

A person who is completing professional work experience or training as part of, or in conjunction with, higher education and training. Any work completed by an intern should be done at the benefit to the intern, not the business hiring. Please visit the Fair Work Australia website for more information on this.

Remuneration & Duration

We recommend that all interns are paid at least minimum wage, however if your internship is unpaid, expenses for travel and lunch should be provided. Internships should have clear start and end dates, with flexibility around days required and study periods. Internships should generally not be full time unless they are short intensives for up to a month. Unpaid internships posted on The Brag Jobs must have a maximum duration of 3 months or 200 hours, whichever is first.

Tasks and Responsibilities

For paid internships, tasks and responsibilities should be in line with their experience and expertise. For unpaid internships, the intern may do some productive activities as part of a learning experience, training or skill development, but it should not be work that would otherwise be done by an employee or is work that the business or organisation has to do. Fair Work Australia states that an unpaid internship should never require the intern to have any previous experience or expertise. Please visit the Fair Work Australia website for more information on this.

Accreditation

Some universities or tertiary organisations require students to complete professional work experience as part of their course. If your internship covers this, please refer to the organisation and course code in your job description. For more information on this, please contact the university or tertiary organisation directly.

Remote vs on-site

For both remote and on-site internships regular catch ups should be scheduled, and training & development objectives should be adhered to in order to ensure that both parties are getting the most out of the opportunity. This is particularly important for remote internships and should be directly addressed in your internship description. If specific equipment, software or an internet connection is required, remuneration or an allowance should be provided to cover these costs if you aren’t providing this for the duration of the internship
