This weeks Rough Draft follows John Green in a ‘light’ comedy, juxtaposing cultural differences and perceptions of beauty. Actors explore the themes ofidentity, cultural assimilation and body modification in the name of looking good.

Each week, the Sydney Theatre Company presents a free showing of one of their works in progress, giving insight into the creative processes of theatre. This week’s performance focuses on the journey of an aspiring actor.

Playing a convict in a walking tour of The Rocks, John Green is an Anglo-Indian actor with dreams of starring in a beachside soap opera. Fighting a constant image battle, exacerbated by a skin bleaching mother with dreams of breeding out their ethnicity, John must decide how far he will go in his desire to be ‘true blue’.

Resident director at the Sydney Theatre Company, Sarah Goodes leads this performance with actorNicholas Brown and commedian Sam McCool in this exploration of cultural and personal identity.

Lighten Up will be a one-off free performance on Friday February 20 at Warf 2, kicking off at 6.30pm.
