Photographer Louis Whelan has announced a new series called African/Australians to run at Customs House until March.

Whelan is no stranger to art fans, having amassed over 30 national and international awards, including the Julia Margaret Cameron Award, and being a finalist in the National Portrait Prize in 2012 and 2013.

Whalan was inspired towards her new works after fostering a friendship with a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. “I soon discovered that her notable characteristics of gratitude and optimism are a common attribute with many other African Australians. I see the bold colour and contrast in these images as a metaphor for this optimism and hope.”

African/Australians by Louise Whelan is showing at Customs House until Sunday March 22.
