Megadeth will no longer be returning to Australian shores this month for their Soundwave Festival engagements and sideshows.

The news comes via the Megadeth Facebook page, on which frontman Dave Mustaine explained: “Due to circumstances beyond its control, unfortunately Megadeth has to cancel their Australian dates. Megadeth’s decision is unrelated to the fact that Jason Newsted is performing at Soundwave. Jason and I spoke recently and continue to be friends.” Newsted’s band had earlier been kicked off the bill for Megadeth’s sideshow engagements.

In response to the cancellation, Soundwave and Big Day Out promoter AJ Maddah tweeted, “We have done everything they have asked except lie to the fans.” There will be no replacement on the bill at this late stage.

Soundwave lands at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday February 23.
