UPDATE: Lawyers representing the current owners of the Hopetoun have denied any sale, as claimed by Andy Bull.
Famous Sydney venue the Hopetoun Hotel appears to have been purchased by a new owner, who has plans to reopen the Surry Hills pub for live music.
Rumours of the venue’s purchase have been swirling on social media after a series of cryptic Facebook posts suggesting a buyer had secured the site.
The BRAG understands that the new owner of the Hopetoun is Adrian Bull of Blind Records, who has taken to Facebook to confirm his purchase and encourage punters to populate the bar when the time comes.
The Bourke Street landmark, which hosted shows by a who’s who of Australian music from Paul Kelly to Sarah Blasko, was originally constructed between 1836 and 1839. In 2009, it closed its doors amid protests from Sydney music fans and artists.
Word is that The Hopetoun has been sold, and to somebody that’ll support live music.

The Hopetoun is often cited among the first famous live music venues of many to disappear in what has been a tough few years for the Sydney music scene, and a successful return can only mark good news for local musicians and fans.
In 2012, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage recommended the Hopetoun should be retained and conserved, with no vertical additions to the building and no alterations to the facade. Nonetheless, the interior is expected to require renovation before any reopening takes place.
