Founded in 1999 and ratified by the UN, the original vision for International Peace Day was to have 24 hours free from domestic violence, war and in which communities would live in harmony. Today, it represents whatever kind of peace resonates with you, whether that means inner peace, family unity or advocating against war.

Participants are also enouraged to participate in the social media campaign by posting selfies, Tweets and messages using the hashtags#Selfie4Peace, #GoCam4Peace and #SydneyPeaceDay.

OrganisersDeb Shepherd and Susie Wells of Embrace Life, Live Life and broadcaster Karen Swain hope the inaugral event will become a mainstay in the Sydney events calendar.
