This year marks the 100th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the First World War. As part of the celebrations, there will be a number of exhibitions in the Rocks Precinct of Sydney.

The Rocks is a fitting place for such a celebration: as one of Australia’s oldest heritage precincts, the area is home to a lot of history. More than 340 men who were born in the area enlisted in the AIF in 1914. The lives of these men are documented inThe Rocks Wartime Stories,a collection of true and personal stories from the men, women and children from the Rocks who served in the war. This collection will line George Street fro two weeks.

The Descendants Project is another moving exhibition which will be on display. Turkish-Australian artist Mertim Gokalp will be displaying 20 portraits of ten ANZAC and ten Turkish Gallipoli war descendants. The portraits will be accompanied by a collection of personal stories and memoirs, which address a mutual understanding of the desire for peace between the two nations and reflects on the inner conflicts of the human psyche.

The Rocks Wartime Stories will be showing from Monday April 20 – Sunday May 3, andThe Descendants Project will be exhibiting from Friday May 10 – Sunday May 3. For more information, see the Rocks’ website.
