Australia is joining the growing international trend of capsule hotels, with the new hotel now open above Bar Century in the Sydney CBD.

Once a haven of $2 drinks and backpackers, the refurbished Bar Century building will now cater to business travellers and nightlife junkies alike who are looking for a Japanese-style experience of sleeping snugly inside a pod that’s just big enough for you and your personal effects.

Ed Kenny from Giant Design, the company behind the Bar Century fit-out, told Good Food: “The hotel is upstairs from Bar Century. They had over 50 people booked on the first night, at $50 a capsule and $65 (for a double capsule); it’s like a boutique hotel at a bargain price.

Reddit user FistulOfDirkys offered this review: “I stayed there last week. I stayed in a deluxe side opening capsule which cost $70 per night. Capsule was spacious and comfy. Mattress was memory foam like… You get a large locker to store your shit nearby. It’s all card swipe operated. You have a console on the side to operate lights fan and door lock. There’s an Android tv but I couldn’t work it out.

“Experience wise the capsule isn’t something I’d recommend for anyone suffering from claustrophobia. They’re not very soundproof either so you can hear your neighbours. The capsules themselves creak whenever someone climbs in and out of their room. Basic kitchen and shared bathroom is provided.”

So if you’re looking for a last-minute bed in the heart of the city, consider squeezing yourself into the capsule hotel. After all, this might be the future of travelling. Bookings are available via booking.com.
