Wars over which gaming system is superior can now end, as there is now a rare Nintendo and PlayStation hybrid. Only problem? It has sold for more than half a million dollars at auction.
Reported to be one of the most expensive pieces of gaming memorabilia to ever sell at auction, the prototype Nintendo and PlayStation hybrid sold for a record $360,000 USD (nearly $542,000 AUD).
While the prototype was created in a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony, it sadly never reached mass population as Nintendo was said to “abruptly quit the partnership” according to IGN.
For those lucky enough to get their hands on one of the 200 consoles created, the system can use be used to play games that are either on SNES cartridges or on CD-ROMs, making it simple to switch between what games you’re wanting to play.
How did this item come to be one of the highest sold video game lots at auction? A former employee of the partnership managed to snap up the coveted hybrid at a previous bankruptcy auction for a sweet $100 USD.
After years of putting that system to use, owner Terry Diebold decided to put the prototype Nintendo PlayStation hybrid up for auction via Heritage Auctions where it quickly sold for a record breaking price.
So, what has the new owner of this $500k+ system got to look forward to? Well, being one of the owners of a very rare piece of video game history tops the list. Otherwise, the owner can also look forward to hours of blissful video game playing between two different consoles, all without having to switch controllers.
