Oscar-winning French actor Gérard Depardieu has been charged with rape and sexual assault.
The 72-year-old Cyrano de Bergerac actor is accused of raping and sexually assaulted an unnamed then-22-year-old actress at his home in Paris in August 2018.
The woman accused Mr. Depardieu of assaulting her during informal rehearsals for a theatre production. As Variety report, a “source close to the case,” claims that Depardieu is a friend of the victims’ family.
An investigation into the assault took place in 2019 but was dropped citing a lack of evidence. At the time, the Paris prosecutors office said that after “numerous investigations” they had been unable to substantiate the woman’s accusations. It was subsequently reopened in October and has led to charges.
“Mr. Gerard Depardieu was indicted on Dec. 16, 2020 for allegations of rape and sexual assault. No custodial measures were taken against him,” a judicial source confirmed to Variety.
Herve Temime, a lawyer for Depardieu, has released a statement detailing that the actor “completely rejects the accusations.” Depardieu is currently free but under judicial supervision.
