If you have never been to Addison Road Community Centre, you’re in for a treat.
It’s a micro-community that stages theatre and music recitals, has a thriving Indigenous community radio station, hosts regular, amazing food markets from all corners of the globe (you know how globes have corners), has a number of second-hand and surplus stock stores, and contains a Food Pantry: a low cost grocery store that sells (fresh) food and products that would otherwise end up in landfill – which is the fate of upwards of 70% of all produce that is sold in this city.
Plus, the place looks like a caravan park from an imaginary Aussie drama series from the ’90s, which is another big bonus.
But I digress.
As of last week, the Food Pantry opened for Thursday late night shopping; granted 7pm isn’t too late a late night, but up until now the volunteer-ran place was only open during various daytime hours, which isn’t ideal for those with office jobs.
In addition, they are now stocked with surplus bread from Australia’s first social enterprise bakery The Bread & Butter Project.
The new hours are:
Tuesdays 2 pm – 5 pm,
Wednesdays 10 am – 2 pm
Thursdays from 3 pm – 7 pm
Plus, they provide training and employment opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers.
In short: groceries are fresh and cheap, you’re actively helping support those in need, and it looks like a set from a ’90s Aussie drama. What else would you want.
