Throughout 2020 and 2021, adidas will celebrate their iconic ZX silhouette — a staple shoe that has elevated our wardrobes since 1984.
The sneaker was introduced as a collection of running shoes dedicated to catering to the needs of runners of all abilities. It’s the product of the enduring genius of adidas. The marriage between the brand’s most coveted technology, and untouchable aesthetic genius has elevated the ZX to icon status.
Naturally, the sneaker transcended the running realm and was soon adopted by the cultural layabouts of Manchester and Berlin. It’s a shoe shrouded by an air of offbeat mystery. A shoe that doesn’t give too much away about the person donning it. A shoe that detests off-the-cuff analysation from snarky passerby’s.
Perhaps most importantly, it’s a shoe that prioritises comfort. An ode to the satisfying sensation of a squish. Wearing an ZX offers the same bizarre, unidentifiable catharsis that watching cloud slime videos in 2018 did.
The brand with the three stripes is celebrating the ZX and it’s eternal legacy with the 2020 A-ZX program. adidas will be plucking from the past and funnelling it into the future. From self-referential archival tones, to futuristic monochromatic silhouettes.
It’s the kind of versatile shoe that should find a permanent home in all our collective wardrobes. In this age where everything is so chaotic and overwhelming all the time, we shouldn’t be condemned to suffer through the strain of lugging a gym bag stuffed with gaudy runners with us as we commute to and from the office to the gym.
We should have one shoe. One shoe that gives us the freedom to accentuate our collective drips, but also hot-foot it to whatever torturous HIIT class we’ve signed up for.
The adidas A-ZX programs rollout begins today, with their classic ZX 10000 C OG’s. Sneakerheads can look forward to August 14th, when the brand will marry two of their most beloved silhouettes — the ZX and the Superstar— in the the ZX 8000 Superstar. A fusion coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the adidas’ shell-toe sneaker.
