Following the recent success of the first season of After Life, writer and principle star Ricky Gervais has announced a second season is in the works.
The Netflix original series tells the tale of widower Tony Johnson as he navigates the grief-heavy loss of wife Lisa, to cancer.
After Life highlights Gervais’ sentimentality – and his need to seek out humour in the darkest of times. Common themes throughout the first series were narratives around bereavement, substance addiction, suicide, and Alzheimers. Fans were particularly struck by the show’s wit and charm.
The 57-year-old comedian, who wrote, produced and directed the drama, earned his company in excess of $5.9m in just one year. Previously, Gervais has worked on The Office, Family Guy, The Simpsons, and he’s also been a host on numerous Golden Globe Awards events.
In a tweet yesterday afternoon, the famed film-maker and star thanked fans for their showing of love for the first series. “Thanks again for all the love for #AfterLife. I have never had a reaction like this.”
He continues to show his gratitude towards the fans around the world, who’ve responded so well to the series. “The reviews have been great but the response from viewers has been fucking amazing.”
Gervais adds, “You are the best fans in the world,” and continues to confirm a second season is on its way. “Oh, and I’ve started writing series 2.”
