Alejandro Bedoya —captain of Philadelphia Union— has used his platform to call for gun control action. Bedoya scored his teams opening goal in Washington DC on Sunday, and he used his celebration as an opportunity to call out Congress for their lack of action in the wake of this weekend’s mass shooting incidents in Ohio and Texas.
After scoring a goal, Bedoya made a beeline for the TV microphone and shouted “Hey Congress, do something now. End gun violence. Let’s go!”
In an interview that took place after the game, Bedoya revealed that he did not plan the mic grab, but felt compelled to speak up in light of the tragic events.
“I’m not going to sit idly and wait for things to happen 50 years from now — I want change now,” he told reporters.
The captain has been an outspoken advocate for gun control. Before the match on Sunday, Bedoya took to Twitter to share his thoughts on Congress’ inaction. “Seeing more thoughts and prayers bullshit,” he wrote. “Words without actions are just worthless. America, it seems, is becoming a dystopian society.”
“Do something!”

Do something!!! Enough!!!— Alejandro Bedoya (@AleBedoya17) August 4, 2019
The mass shootings that took place this weekend resulted in 29 fatalities. It is the 31st mass shooting that has taken place in America in 2019.
Bedoya is just one of the many celebrities who, over the past few days, have used their platform to advocate for gun control. Rihanna recently took to Instagram to blast US President Donald Trump over his response to the Texas shooting.
“Your country had 2 terrorist attacks back to back, hours apart leaving almost 30 innocent people dead,” Rihanna wrote.
“This, just days after yet another terrorist attack in California, where a terrorist was able to LEGALLY purchase an assault rifle (AK-47) in Vegas, then drive hours to a food festival in Cali leaving 6 more people dead including a young infant baby boy!
“Imagine a world where it’s easier to get an AK-47 than a VISA! Imagine a world where they build a wall to keep terrorists IN AMERICA!!!
“My prayers and deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all the victims and the communities affected and traumatized, from Texas, California, and Ohio! I’m so sorry for your loss! Nobody deserves to die like this! NOBODY!
