While responding to a tweet regarding the Uvalde shooting in Texas, Australian director Leigh Whannell says he plans to leave the U.S.

Leigh Whannell, director of movies such as The Invisible Man and Upgrade recently responded to a tweet that was addressing the Uvalde shooting in Texas in which 21 people were killed.

Whannell’s response included that he and his family are looking to move away from the United States as soon as possible, despite the frustration of having to leave behind their life and friends they had cultivated over 17 years in the country.

“As an American who moved to a country with sensible gun laws, let me say clearly: you don’t have to live in a society where kids routinely get shot in school; where children practice “active shooter” drills; where society has grown numb to mass shootings happening every few days.”

“Imagine the pain of the parents. Our family is moving out of the US as soon as is logistically possible, which is an option we’re lucky to have given that I’m an Aussie. I love my friends here in LA and the life I’ve built over the past 17 years but my kids have to come first.”

Many people criticized the original tweet for being out of touch with the reality many Americans face who aren’t privileged enough to have the means to move to a new country.

“Leaving America is a HUGE privilege. Now with C19 leaving millions with disabilities, many countries don’t accept disabilities. NZ (and others) won’t take people if their BMI is over 30+. You have to make a good living. Some won’t take you if you are too old.”

“not everyone wants to move from their hometown. they shouldn’t need to. or they don’t have means to. they just want sensible laws and bans so that no child is shot at schools again. everyone is going on about how complicated it is. look at the example of NZ. it took them one day”

“you going to give me the money to move out of this country and get resident status in another, brian???”

“Unless you’re poor or sick or disabled or can’t get a sponsor or if moving means you’re leaving your niblings to the brutal realities of living here or you don’t have skills to get a job in another country or or or. Saying “move somewhere safer” is the height of privilege.”

“pretty sure escaping amerikkka is a huge privilege most don’t have”
