Life is cyclical and 2020 has seen an early-noughts renaissance. Between the hotly debated return of low-rise jeans, and the renewed interest in The Simple Life courtesy of the Paris Hilton documentary, it was only a matter of time before Australian Idol made a comeback.

And a comeback it has made. The iconic singing competition that defined 2000s Australian culture is back, baby. It’s been twelve years since the show last aired, and it’s finally set to return as part of Channel Seven’s 2022 primetime line-up.

“Idol is the granddaddy of them all,” Angus Ross, Seven’s Director of Programming shared in a statement with 7NEWS. “The biggest show in the world comes to Seven in 2022, and we know Australians are going to love it.”

Referring to Australian Idol as “the grandaddy” is comedy perfection, but there’s certainly a ring of truth to the sentiment. Shows like The Voice and Australia’s Got Talent have tried to emulate the drama and tension that Idol brought and failed.

Australian Idol launched the careers of some of the brightest names in Australian music, like Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Casey Donovan, Stan Walker and Shannon Noll. It also streamlined the process of Westfield’s everywhere scouting for entertainment talent to celebrate the lates Kia sportage giveaway.

There’s been no word as to whether we can expect the star power trio of Dicko, Mark Holden and Marcia Hynes to grace the judge’s desk. I just need Channel 7 to know that I am ready to boycott the whole damn thing if it’s going to be void of the hallowed “touchdown.”
