Stoners don’t exactly have a reputation for being on time – probably the explanation for why Australia’s likely first ‘stoner food’ café, D’Munchies, had a low-key launch to a handful of people, despite causing a social media stir on Tuesday.

In typical stoner fashion, however, within five minutes of the ribbon being cut, there was a line of funky Newtown locals that went out the door.

D’Munchies is the brainchild of two cricket mates – David Pyne and Richard Chind – and specialises in providing stoner food such as pretzel ice cream, pizza pretzel hot dogs and ravioli nachos. They have spent the last six months creating D’Munchies, though Chind says the idea had been floating around for a couple of years.

Despite the deviation from standard foodie fare, providing quality food is still the café’s mantra. Having nibbled on onion rings, some fries and a pretzel ice-cream, this writer concurs.

“Our whole idea is to make sure that we get high-quality food, which we source ourselves,” said Chind. “We make some of the products ourselves in here. Rather than outsourcing paddies, for example, we do our own minces, we do our own bacon, we do all those things in-house.”

He added that this was more or less a soft launch, giving patrons an opportunity to provide feedback for the hard launch on –you guessed it –Wednesday April 20.
