Because why on earth was that movie the highest-grossing in the first place?

Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige has taken to the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to announce the news that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is finally about to dethrone Avatar.

Feige made the news we’ve all been speculating, official, announcing that the film is just about to pass Avatar’s $2.7897 billion global box-office record. This will mean that ‘Endgame’ will become the highest-grossing film to ever exist.

Avatar has held the record for nine years since its release, but it’s so close to finally losing it’s number one spot that we can almost taste it.

Watch the trailer for ‘Avengers: Endgame’ below, if you haven’t already seen it:

As of Friday, ‘Endgame’s’ global gross was $2.789.2 billion, only $500 000 behind ‘Avatar’.

It has taken ‘Endgame’ just 3 months since its April release to finally beat this significant record. The film could also be potentially on track to becoming the first film to gross $3 billion in the box office. This would be another massive achievement for Disney, Marvel Studios and the Russo brothers, who directed the film.

The Russo brothers have taken to Twitter to share their thanks with their fans.

“Thanks to you, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all time” Feige thanked the audience at the Marvel panel at Comic-Con for this overwhelming achievement.

This achievement has been aided by the re-release of ‘Endgame’ that featured a few extra clips that were cut from the original film.

Only five films have ever passed $2 billion in the global box office: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar’. Both James Cameron and the Russo brothers hold two films on this list which is an incredible feat on its own.

Whether you’re a fan of Marvel films or not, this is a significant achievement in the world of cinema and we can’t wait to see what happens after the release of the rumoured Avatar 2.

Of course, let’s not forget, Disney is the real winner here, as it now owns both Marvels’ Avengers and Camerons’ Avatar after the Disney-Fox Merger.
