Aziz Ansari has a new Netflix special coming this month, his fourth comedy special for the streaming platform.
Titled Nightclub Comedian, the show was filmed last December at “an intimate surprise gig” in New York City. The poster shows Ansari crouched onstage on a barstool as some fans laugh and applaud just a few feet away from him.
It’s the continuation of Ansari and Netflix’s strong relationship: as well as this being his fourth comedy special for the streaming platform, Netflix is also home to his acclaimed TV series Master of None. As per Netflix Is a Joke, Nightclub Comedian is also Netflix’s first stand up special of 2022.
Ansari’s last Netflix special came out in 2019. Titled Aziz Ansari: Right Now, the Spike Jonze-directed piece was nominated for a Grammy for Best Comedy Album. It was released one year after Ansari was accused of sexual misconduct, with the comedian addressing the accusation in his show.
“I know this isn’t the most hilarious way to begin a comedy show, but it’s important to me that you know how I feel about that whole thing before we share this night together,” he started that show by saying.
“Ultimately, I just felt terrible that this person felt this way,” he continued. “And after a year or so, I just hope it was a step forward. It moved things forward for me and made me think about a lot. I hope I’ve become a better person.”
He added later: “I saw the world where I don’t ever get to do this again, and it almost felt like I died. In a way, I did. That old Aziz who said, ‘oh treat yo self’ or whatever, he’s dead. And I’m glad. ‘Cause that guy was always looking forward to whatever was next. I don’t think that way anymore.”
