Today, the 8th March, marks International Women’s Day, a day defined as an occasion to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

International Women’s Day first came to fruition over 100 years ago, in 1909, and was organized by the now-dissolved Socialist Party of America.

While society has come a long way in the last century with recognizing women as an equal sex, there are still many factors where women struggle to receive equal rights. Between the pay gap, the underrepresentation in government and social connotations associated with women, there is still a lot to be done.

You can do your part to help honor women and show your support by donating to a charity that’s working to close the equality gap. Below is a handpicked list of organizations we’ve put together that are doing their bit to help.

Girls Who Code

Girls Who Code is an organization with a mission to close the gender gap in the tech field. Studies show that only 24% of computer scientists are women, meaning that the field is significantly male dominated. Girls Who Code charity aims to completely close the gender gap in new entry-level tech jobs by 2027. Stats on their website show that they have reached 500 million people, have helped 300,000 women and that half of the female’s they’ve helped come from underrepresented groups.

She Should Run

It’s commonly known that women are underrepresented when it comes to politics, however the actual stats are shocking. As of 2019, the global participation rate of women in national-level parliaments is 24.5% which is, fortunately, up from 8% in 2013. The aim of She Should Run is to convince women from all political leanings, ethnicities, sexual identities, and backgrounds to see themselves as future candidates.

Dress for Success Sydney

This Sydney based non profit aims to improve the employability of disadvantaged women, trans women and non-binary people. They do so by providing professional clothing, a network of support coaching and career development tools to women in need. Aside from helping dress women for success, the charity also has a support program that teaches resume writing skills, interview skills, and holds workshops to improve both women’s condense and employability.

It is one of International Women’s Days official charities of choice. The company produces informative campaigns and teaching services to help those in positions of power understand how to be more inclusive.
