Hey, remember the internet? There’s a pretty good chance that unless you’re some of absolute genius, you’re using it right now. But, how much do you remember the ‘glory’ days of the internet from the mid-’90s?
While the ‘dancing baby’ GIF conjures up instant memories of poorly-designed AngelFire and Tripod websites, it’s clear that technological advancements have made websites not only simpler, but far more aesthetically appealing.
However, some of these old websites still remain out there for your enjoyment. In fact, have you ever visited the official website for the 1996 movie Space Jam? It’s still exactly the same as it was 23 years ago, complete with questionable HTML, browser frames, and text colour that clashes with the background.
Surely, you’d think, that the days of amateur websites are behind us now, nothing more than a relic of the burgeoning internet age. Well, it turns out that just like cassettes, jorts, and measles, poorly-designed websites are making the comeback nobody asked for.
Check out the infamous ‘Dancing Baby’ video:
Next month, Marvel Studios are set to release their latest superhero movie, Captain Marvel. Featuring the likes of Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jude Law, the film is set 24 years in the past, in the ancient year of 1995 (which isn’t a phrase we ever thought we’d say).
However, in keeping with the film’s setting, Marvel have launched a seperate website for the movie, designed to look as if it was ripped right from the dial-up days of 1995.
While the site itself is actually quite functional for today’s user, its design is intended to appear as tacky and outdated as ever, with awful backgrounds, rotating GIFs, poor Word Art, a visitor counter, and even a vintage media player.
As endearing as it is hard to look at, the site also features an old-fashioned guestbook so that internet tourists can express their disbelief that such a website exists in 2019.
Captain Marvel is out in March. While you wait, you can… marvel at their throwback website here.
