Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are set to portray the The New York Times journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein scandal in 2017. The film is called She Said.
Based on the New York Times bestselling book: She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement, the film uses the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal coming to light in The New York Times as its backbone, the film is more than that.
It focuses itself on the all-women team of journalists who banded and worked together, pushing through the seemingly never-ending threats which came in as litigation and various forms of intimidation in a bid to stop the women in their tracks.
She Said will detail the horrifying allegations for the first-time as a screenplay, with comparisons already being drawn between the upcoming film and other movies like Spotlight and All the President’s Men.
As reported by Deadline, the rights for the film were first optioned back in 2018 and is now confirmed to be produced by Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment. Oscar nominee, Megan Ellison will executive produce alongside Sue Naegle for Annapurna. For Plan B, Oscar award winners Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will be on deck to produce.
The film is set to be directed by Unorthodox’s Maria Schrader based on a script by Oscar-winner Rebecca Lenkiewicz.
The Weinstein sex scandal revealed decades of alleged sexual harrassment and assaults brought against The Weinstein Company and the loads of money that were forked out in order to buy the silence of the accusers. The scandal sparked the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements.
These movements not only changed Hollywood for the better, with improvements still needing to be made today and thye are still sending much-needed tidal waves all around the world today.
