She’s one of the most enduring and successful musicians of her generation, but now renowned gay icon Cher may be set to make her way to Australia to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the 71-year-old musician is all but locked in to perform at next year’s event.

Rumours of an upcoming tour by Cher have been rife all year, with the singer Tweeting in May that she hopes to “do concerts in Australia & New Zealand in 2018.” While nothing was announced, the legendary muso then ignited rumours once again when she cryptically Tweeted “Where am I going in March?” earlier this month.

Could this mean that Cher will be heading to Sydney in March for her first Aussie performances since 2005? Well, according to a seemingly-prematurely leaked story, it seems highly likely.

The Sydney Morning Herald noted that the Australian Radio Network seemed to jump the gun last week when they published a story that claimed that the singer was “officially coming to town.” SMH notes that story was taken offline soon after, but remains online in a cached form.

Considering the recent events in the Australian LGBTQI+ community, the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras couldn’t come at a better time, and with a huge headliner like Cher, it almost seems too good to be true.

While festival officials are yet to make a statement on the rumours of the singer performing at next year’s event, they have indeed stated that she is being chased as “plan A” for the festival’s entertainment. They did of course note that due to the rigorous dealings and organisation that goes along with huge names like Cher, they do have fallback options in place.

The 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is set to take place on March 3rd, 2018. Will we see Cher as the headliner? We choose to believe…
