Chris Pine has finally addressed whether Harry Styles did actually spit on him at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere at Venice Film Festival.

In a video that went viral in September last year, Don’t Worry Darling’s director Olivia Wilde is seated next to Chris Pine and the two are chatting. Styles then walks in and takes the chair next to Pine, but appears to quickly spit at his co-star on the way down. Pine suddenly pauses and an awkward look crosses his face as he mutters something inaudible. Check out the clip below:

However, approximately six months after the highly speculated ‘spit-gate’ incident went down, Pine has finally addressed whether or not it actually happened.

“Harry did not spit on me,” Pine told Esquire, adding: “Harry’s a very very kind guy.”

The actor said that ‘spit gate’ was bought to his attention shortly after he left the festival. “She [My publicist] says, “We have to craft a message about what happened in Venice.’ And I’m like ‘About what?’ ‘About Harry spitting on you.’ Which I have no idea what happened. She showed me the thing. It does look, indeed, like Harry spitting on me. He didn’t spit on me.”

Pine clarified that Styles was actually referencing a long-running personal joke that the men share as he was sitting down.

“I think what he said, is he leaned down, and I think he said, ‘It’s just words, isn’t it?’ Because we had this little joke, because we’re all jetlagged, we’re all trying to answer these questions, and sometimes when you’re doing these press things, your brain goes all befuddled, you know, you start speaking gibberish, and we had a joke like, ‘It’s just words, man.'”
