Coldplay might be the only massively-famous band in the history of music to do a full promotional press and world tour off the back of an EP – you wouldn’t think they’d bother, frankly; especially considering that when you get to that Coldplay-level of success, EPs are usually stopgap releases.

Still, that’s what they are doing for the Kaleidoscope EP, which is why Chris Martin was on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge yesterday, covering Paul Simon’s spirited classic ‘Graceland’, backed by a choir and a sizable horn section.

Martin explained this song soundtracks an early memory for him, as a 10-year-old child living in Zimbabwe.

“I was trying to get the attention of another 10-year-old girl,” he said.” There was no texting in those days, but she was doing the eighties equivalent of not texting me back and I remember this song playing and thinking, ‘at least the music is awesome.’”

I bet you didn’t even know Chris Martin lived in Zimbabwe, did you? You gotta wonder what else he’s hiding…
