The iconic Conservatorium of Music will be celebrating its centenary next month.

One of the oldest and most prestigious music schools in Australia, the Con began in the converted horse stables of old Government House. In the 100 years since its inception, the Con has launched the careers of countless musicians. It is now home to the Conservatorium High School, the Open Academy and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

To celebrate its centenary, the Con will present the Sydney premiere of MASS,by Leonard Bernstein. The massive cast will be made up of more than 400 high school and tertiary students, staff and alumni of the Con, with students from Sydney Children’s Choir, who will perform in the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House.

Chair of Conducting at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Professor Eduardo Diazmuñoz says “As we look forward to the next 100 years,MASSalso sends an important message about tolerance, acceptance and peace in today’s world. This is something that music has always been successful in promoting across cultures and in bringing people together. It promises to be a memorable centenary event for the Sydney Con.”

MASS will play at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday May 6.
