This comes after a recent study by Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) revealed that domestic violence surges by 40.7% on State of Origin game days. Non domestic assault is also shown to rise by 71.8% over this period. The study was conducted over a six year period.

The Coopers Hotel also posted a tweet denigrating their female customers in the service of promoting their $10 burgers.

Gary Wright, The General Manager of The Coopers Hotel Newtown, then edited the post with a photo of Care Bears before deleting the post entirely and taking responsibility.

In the wake of the recent coverage of the links between domestic violence and the NRL, the GM of the Coopers Hotel seems to be utilising this to promote his business.

Commenting on the recent study on the link between domestic violence and NRL, Chief Executive, Michael Thorn has this to say:

“It’s crystal clear that the State of Origin fixtures are leading to a surge in domestic violence. It’s happening on the National Rugby League’s watch and women and children are being harmed as a direct consequence of these games.”

The Coopers Hotel has been bombarded with negative feedback on Facebook. One poster on Facebook asserted that she was told to “take a joke” and had “memes explained to her.”
