Australian actor Dan Wyllie has been charged with domestic violence offences after an alleged assault that took place in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

According to a NSW Police spokesman, the 50-year-old was arrested by police on Saturday “following an investigation by officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command into an alleged domestic violence assault”, they said in a statement.

According to reports, Wyllie has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (domestic violence related) and common assault (domestic violence related) and police have also applied for an apprehended violence order against the actor in order to protect his partner, director Shannon Murphy.

Murphy, who married Wyllie in 2014, is an esteemed director who was nominated for best film at the 2019 Venice Film Festival for directorial debut with the film Babyteeth. She has also since directed a number of episodes of the hugely popular series Killing Eve.

In a 2012 interview, Wyllie gushed about his then-girlfriend Murphy, saying: “She’s my best friend.”

The pair, who share a daughter together, wed in 2014 at the Anantara Bophut Resort & Spa on the tropical island of Koh Samui, Thailand in an intimate ceremony that included Toni Collette among their guests.

Of Wyllie, Murphy has previously said: “We’re both pretty bossy and opinionated. Dan’s experience with acting is just huge, and I feel like when he talks to me about acting it’s so concise and simplified and expressed in a way that makes me access an understanding of it much better and quicker.

“Often if I am having any trouble with anything, I do talk to him about it and his advice about actors and what I should talk to them about is exceptional and always works.”

Dan Wyllie is well known for his performances across a variety of roles in popular Australian television series, including Love My Way, Puberty Blues, Underbelly, Rake,  Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Offspring and No Activity, as well as his roles in Romper StomperAnimal Kingdom and Muriel’s Wedding.

Wyllie has been granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.
