Daniel Kaluuya gives an update on his ‘Barney’ film which will tackle the topic of Barney’s message and the idea of forced love.
In a recent exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Kaluuya talked with them about his career. Kaluuya discussed what the laundry list of accolades he earned for his indelible performance as Fred Hampton has done for his career and how it has opened up doors for him.
Towards the end of the interview, the Get Out star talked about his new production company 59% Productions, and what they are working on next. One of the first projects the company has taken to is a Barney film that Kaluuya confirmed is still in early development as the scripts are being reworked.
Kaluuya’s production slate is still firming up, and he’s reluctant to discuss what’s in the pipeline at 59%, but one of the first projects announced was a live-action film based on the iconic purple dinosaur Barney. He confirmed that the project is still in early development and the script is being reworked. After I tell him how left-field the movie sounds, we find ourselves having a conversation about our shared childhood trauma of discovering that Barney’s framing of a world wasn’t as simple as “I love you, you love me / We’re a happy family.”
Kaluuya went on to talk about the importance of children’s films to him, as they act as a medium to open up the doors to all film for those new to living.
“My last number of films have been so aligned to kind of what I stand for as a man,” he says. “But there are a whole lot of things that I do as a man. I love kids’ films. How did everyone get into films? Watching kids’ films. I don’t want to restrict myself to the limitations of what I’m perceived as.”
“Daniel Kaluuya confirms his live-action’Barney’ movie is happening and it will be darker than the OG TV show “Barney taught us,’I love you, you love me. Won’t you say you love me too?’ That’s one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when that isn’t true? “(Via@EW)”
