In a move eerily similar to what happened four years ago, Saturday Night Live (SNL) is getting Dave Chappelle to host its post-election episode again.

It goes without saying that 2020 hasn’t been normal for anyone or any industry. Take SNL for example, the long-running sketch show was forced into being a remote sketch comedy show during the early days of the pandemic before transitioning back to a controlled live filming environment for its 46th season, which started with an unprecedented five-week run of new live shows.

Perhaps sensing that things were a little too unusual, SNL decided to inject some routine back into proceedings by getting the always-reliable John Mulaney to host before casually revealing that Dave Chappelle will be hosting the next episode, which will take place after the 2020 U.S. presidential election and be a sort of post-election special.

Now it’s not that weird to get Dave Chappelle back on SNL since he’s done it a few times before, though the lack of a traditional musical guest in the reveal card is pretty interesting.

Thing is, the last time he did it was days after the 2016 U.S. presidential election when Trump defeated Hilary Clinton and the world subsequently took a turn for the weird and awful.

So unsurprisingly, the parallels between this announcement of Chappelle as SNL host and what happened in 2016 weren’t lost on many folks and some started getting some horrible flashbacks to what happened in 2016.

Look, I’m not a superstitious person or anything, but it does seem like SNL is sort of tempting fate here by getting Chappelle to host another post-election episode even though signs are looking promising for Joe Biden to triumph over Trump.

But hey, let’s not look too deeply into those parallels because that’s just a one way street down an anxiety hole.

What we do know for certain is that Chappelle will do a great job based on his previous hosting efforts. Given his history of turning political events into some smart commentary that’s laced with humour and all the headline-grabbing things he’s said and done in 2020 so far, we’re going to be in for a treat when the renowned stand-up comic returns next week.

And hey, if the world goes pear-shaped again, at least we’ll have Chappelle to help us process how the hell this happened (again).
