While Fornite may have taken the world by storm with its adaptive world, strategic building and constantly flossing, Respawn Entertainment stealthily released its own battle royale into the mix last month, Apex Legends.
Packing a surprising level of polish, the game has quickly earned itself a loyal fanbase, but if you’re only jumping now, or struggling to stay alive, here’s a few tips and tricks to make your next run legendary.
Less weight = more speed
Whether you’re hoofing it to a pinged location, hunting down an enemy or escaping a dangerous situation, speed is always your friend. It’s worth noting then that holstering your weapon will give you a small speed boost. Just make sure you’re not leaving yourself totally vulnerable at the same time.

Where there’s one… there’s likely three
Success in Apex is generally dictated by a simple rule that scouts have been shouting out for years: always be prepared. As a result, unless you run into a disorganised group of lone wolfs, there’s a pretty large chance that when you encounter a single foe, his two friends are almost lurking in the shadows as well.
Because of this, make sure you’re in a strong position that won’t have you flanked, and make sure you always…
Focus your fire
While the idea of going mano-a-mano sounds good in theory, living out this Hollywood fantasy will often lead to your death. The best squads focus all of their fire on a single enemy before moving onto the next one in group. Remember to communicate and not lose focus amidst the thrill of the kill.

Learn your colours
Like it or not, there’s a certain knowledge base you’ll need to drill into your memory if you want to be the best. One of the most important things you need to remember is colours for item rarity and ammo.
Once you have a weapon, grabbing the corresponding ammo and attachments is crucial, but keep in mind that the rarer finds will always give you an extra leg up. Here’s your study material:
Item colours
- Common = Grey
- Rare = Blue
- Epic = Purple
- Legendary = Gold/Yellow
Ammo colours:
- Light Rounds = Light Brown/Orange
- Shotgun Shells = Burgundy/Red
- Heavy Rounds = Teal/Blue
- Energy Ammo = Lime Green

Don’t stress about falling
Just in case you’ve never been game enough to try, fall damage doesn’t exist in Apex Legends, so if you need to make a perilous jump to save your bacon, run like the wind, Bullseye. This can also be used strategically to get the jump on an unsuspecting foe from above.
Check if your weapon has an alternate firing mode
Not every weapon in Apex possess this feature, but if there’s a small button prompt to the left if its firing type indicator, you’re in luck – granting your arsenal a little more flexibility.
