Donald Glover, the multi-hyphenate behind Atlanta, Childish Gambino, mc DJ, and Simba on the upcoming Lion King remake, may have landed his own Star Wars spin-off if reports are to be believed.
Donald Glover plays gallant gambler Lando Calrissian in the latest franchise instalment Solo: A Star Wars Story. Now, according to French publication Première France, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy may have spilled the beans on future plans at Cannes Film Festival.
Première France has reported that Kathleen Kennedy said: “We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian […] Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca, but Lando will be next.”
The comment has been picked up worldwide, however a spokesperson for Lucasfilm has jumped in quickly to shut down the hype.
The spokesperson has said Kennedy’s comments were misunderstood:
“Kathleen Kennedy was saying ‘I would love to see a Lando film in the future, and it would also be fun to tell another Han and Chewie story,” the spokesperson told Fortune.
Première has even published a correction to its original article, adding the following quote: “One day, we would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian, but that’s not relevant. It would be fun to tell the story of Han and Chewie…”
Whether Donald Glover is about to take the starring role in the next non-Skywalker saga opus or not, the arts industry shouldn’t be surprised. Everything the renaissance man touches turn to critically-acclaimed commercial success, and sparks meaningful conversation. Don’t believe us?
