If saving someone’s life wasn’t a good enough incentive to donate blood, this may sweeten the deal. This Friday (June 14th) is World Donor Day. To celebrate the Australian Red Cross Blood Service are hosting a 24-hour donate-a-thon.

The service will be opening its centres in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane CBDs from 7 pm on Thursday, June 13 until 7 pm on Friday, June 14.

Those who choose to donate will be treated to live music, magicians and a caricature artist. Celebrity chefs will also be dropping into to whip up special post-donation snacks. Sydney will be treated to food from Nelly Robinson of nel. restaurant, and you’ll be able to indulge in a “donor” kebab.

Of course, it’s not a party unless Gelato Messina get involved, the good lords of ice-cream have whipped up a bespoke flavour to celebrate you sacrificing your blood for the greater good. You’ll be puckering up to a sweet scoop of ABSO-BLOODY-LUTELY, a blood orange cheesecake gelato with red velvet cake and raspberry puree.

Bloody Great Friday aims to raise awareness about the need for 99,000 new donors in the next twelve months. As it stands, one in three Australians will need a blood donation at some point in their life, but only one in thirty actually donate. Make sure you register to donate this Friday, it’s going to be chock a block.
