It seems like all of our ’90s faves are getting the reboot treatment, and the latest is set to be Doogie Howser – but with a major twist.

According to Deadline, streaming giant Disney+ has now green-lit Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., the working title for a reboot of the popular series, which aired for four seasons between 1989 and 1993 and starred a young Neil Patrick Harris as the titular teen doctor.

In a refreshing take on the original show, the reboot sees the main character as a 16-year-old mixed-race girl named Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha who is indeed a teenage doctor – oh, it also takes place in Hawaii.

“Thirty years ago, a young medical prodigy took the world by storm and left a lasting impact on pop culture,” Ricky Strauss, president of content and marketing at Disney+, said in a statement. “Kourtney and the team at 20th Television have created a very modern take on this beloved property which will resonate with our global Disney+ audience. We can’t wait to introduce the world to the new Doogie!”

Dayna and Jesse Bochco, the wife and son of Doogie Howser creator Steven Bochco, have also been enlisted as executive producers for the new series, which is set to go into production later this year for a 2021 premiere date.

Fresh Off the Boat and How I Met Your Mother‘s Kourtney Kang is also at the helm as the show’s executive producer.

The original series was also created by David E. Kelley in addition to Steven and starred Harris as a genius teen doctor trying to balance being a doctor along with everyday teen problems.
