A 50-year-old man from Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs has tested positive for coronavirus.
During a press conference today, Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed that the man returned a positive test result on Wednesday morning. He has no known links to coronavirus cases in hotel quarantine.
Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the man had not recently returned from overseas, did not work in quarantine and had no contacts with the hospital system.
Immediate genomic testing is underway to determine if the case is linked to anyone in the quarantine system or coronavirus cases in other states.
The man visited a number of venues, including Event Cinemas Bondi Junction and Figo Restaurant at Rushcutters Bay whilst infectious. He and his close contacts are all self-isolating.

“We have to maintain our social distancing. We have to make sure we have good hand hygiene. We need to get tested with the mildest of symptoms, and very, very importantly and significantly, we need to use the QR codes,” Ms Berejiklian shared in a statement.
Dr Chant said the man had a high viral load, and may potentially be highly infectious. Emphasising the importance of genomic testing, Dr. Chant added: “sometimes the next ring of testing around this case will actually tell us whether he’s passed it on.
“In this case, we’re really interested in how this person acquired the infection to understand the broader risk in the community.”
