Maude Apatow, the actress who plays Lexi in Euphoria, has given some insight into the end of season 2, talking about her character’s development while praising creator Sam Levinson.

This week, Euphoria fans got to see Lexi in the spotlight as she prepares for East Highland High’s play.

While season 1 saw Lexi as more of a supporting character for sister Cassie and best friend Rue, season 2 had Maude Apatow and Sam Levinson coming up with an interesting arc for Lexi inspired by Apatow’s own teenage years.

“All this stuff about Lexi getting aggro backstage, that was all just based on me in high school,” Apatow said. “Once we talked about the idea, Sam went in and wrote it all.”

When talking to EW about Lexi’s character arcs in season 2, Apatow said that when it came time to brainstorm character ideas, Levinson was really receptive to what she was pitching. “Sam is great on the phone, and I wanted to call him while he was writing, just so we could brainstorm together different ideas of how the character could evolve.” She also spoke about how Lexi is a theatre kid because Apatow was very much one when she was in high school.

The two first met when Apatow wanted to audition for Assasination Nation, which was a movie that Sam Levinson worked on, and the two seemed to immediately click: “He really understood me right away.”

“I loved working with him. He’s just so smart, and he’s seen like every movie on earth. He just has so much knowledge and he’s so passionate, and I think he’s so funny too. I just have such a fun time working with him.”

The set of Assassination Nation was where Apatow first heard whispers of Euphoria, and she knew she wanted to work with Sam Levinson again so she went through the “tough audition process”.

Apatow has said that Lexi is a character that takes traits from both herself and the creator of the show.

“Sam and I have takled a lot about how we both are anxious in life, and being able to channel all of that anxiety and those feelings into making something and using it.” Apatow revealed. “I feel like my writing and my acting, that’s what I do, and I think Sam also does that, and that’s what Lexi does.”

With the response this week’s episode got on Twitter, it looks like if fans want to come for Levinson, they’ll have to go through Lexi herself.
