Practically every Euphoria fan was united on one opinion about last night’s season finale: Elliot’s song to Rue took up too much precious time of the hotly anticipated episode.
With so many loose ends to tie up, and just sixty minutes to do so, Elliot’s song took up three and half minutes, which approximately calculates to almost 6% of the entire episode.
The scene saw Elliot (Dominic Fike) strumming away on the guitar while serenading his pal Rue (Zendeya). During the bedroom performance, Zendeya sat by him and (somewhat awkwardly) nodded her way through the song.
What many fans didn’t know, was that the track was actually co-written by Zendaya and Labrinth, the series’ composer. And, despite Elliot belting out the tune, he was actually surprised about its placement in the episode, too.
“Sam [Euphoria’s writer and director] just came up to me and was like, ‘Yo, I was thinking you play the guitar in this and like, you sing a song. It’s to Rue, but not really about Rue, but it, like, is about Rue, but it’s like a surreal moment, but it’s not,” he said in the after-show episode. “And I’m like, ‘You just made this decision?’”
The decision to include such a long scene that didn’t play majorly into the plot line upset many fans, with social media blowing up over the call. But, what exactly was the song about? Below are the full lyrics for the track that’s been dubbed ‘Elliot’s Song’ by Zendeya and Labrinth.
[Verse 1]
I’ve got no place
Buildin’ you a rocket up to outer space
I watch you fade
Keeping the lights on in this forsaken place
[Chorus]
Little star
Feels like you fell right on my head
Gave you away to the wind
I hope it was worth it in the end
You and my guitar
I think you may be my only friend
I gave it all to see you shine again
I hope it was worth it in the end
[Verse 2]
Us against the world
Just a couple sinner’s makin’ fun of hell
If I keep you here
I’ll only be doing this for myself
[Chorus]
Little star
Feels like you fell right on my head
Gave you away to the wind
I hope it was worth it in the end
Yеah, I hope so
Think you may be my only friend
I gavе it all to see you shine again
I hope it was worth it in the end
[Bridge]
I know this thing is broken
So I leave my door wide open
Been some time since we’ve spoken
One day we’ll meet again
Some distance when you’re older
You’ll come lean on my shoulder
Tell me that storm is over
That day we meet again
[Chorus]
Feels like you fell right on my head
Gave you away to the wind
I hope it was worth it in the end
You and my guitar
I think you may be my only friend
I gave you away (Mh-mhhm-hmm)
I hope it was worth it in the end
