The idea of expanding on the story of iconic Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi is a topic as old as the republic itself. While no two cans can agree on just how his story could be expanded on, all fans agree on one thing: Obi-Wan Kenobi is Ewan McGregor and any addition to the Obi-Wan canon must involve him. Today, news has arrived related to this very topic. It’s comes as a surprise, but a welcome one for sure.

Deadline have blown minds with their report that McGregor is now in talks to once again don his cloak and raise his lightsabre as Obi-Wan. While specific details are being kept under lock and key, it would seem that the project will be an epic series rather than a feature spin-off film.

Judging by how Star Wars series go compared to Star Wars spin-off films, this is nothing short of great news.

While Deadline broke the story of the Disney+ series will go live on the forthcoming Disney+ streaming platform, Cinelinx has confirmed that McGregor has already signed off on the return with Lucasfilms, with two seperate sources confirming as such with the publication.

Ideally, the series will follow the life of Obi-Wan post exile, and therefore post-Revenge of the Sith, as he watches over a young Luke Skywalker. This fan’s personal hope is that it’s a gritty, R18+ ‘save the boy’ as opposed to ‘save the universe’ take on things a la Marvel’s Logan, and we watch as Obi-Wan grapples with a failing belief in The Force.

While nothing is confirmed, there is a strong vibe that Disney will capitalise on the upcoming D23 event by revealing more details about the exclusive series set to drop on Disney+, which is expected to launch in November. As well as the Obi-Wan series, Fans of the Star Wars universe can get excited for The Mandalorian, which while not specifically related to fan favourite Boba Fett, it will still give some otherwise unobtainable insight into that characters universe.

Disney are keeping their cards close to their chest with Disney+, and details on their Australian roll-out are few and far between. Here’s hoping D23 will be illuminating in ALL of the ways.
