ab [intra] is this year’s opening offering from Sydney Dance Company. No caps, all Latin. ab [intra] is the creation of Rafael Bonachela, who in 2018 is marking his tenth year as Artistic Director of SDC. Bonachela takes 17 dancers to the stage and asks: what drives you? From within? The offering is visually hypnotic, visceral and confronts the edges of our humanity.

ab [intra] is the newest creation from the highly-acclaimed Spanish-born choreographer Rafael Bonachela, who celebrates his tenth year as the Artistic Director of the Sydney Dance Company in 2018.

Spanish born Bonachela took over this role in 2009, and says he brought in new dancers with ‘open minds and intelligent bodies.’ ab [intra] is Latin, it means ‘from within’. The SDC website teases what is to come with the season opener, with twisted torsos, limbs extended, backs bended, a mess of bodies in tortuous unison.

Bonachela is a true choreographer, with a vision that extends outside of the rehearsal studio and dance stage. Bonachela’s vision is staid and impressive, driving and global. “Sydney Dance Company is our name but we see ourselves as Australia’s national contemporary dance company.”

The score was composed by Nick Wales who has created a mix of classical and contemporary, all electronic. Wales writes comfortably in the contemporary pop world, collaborating with Australian musicians like Sarah Blasko and Ngaiire.

ab [intra] is set to take over the Roslyn Packer Theatre from May 14th – 26th, before moving to Melbourne, and then onward to an extensive regional tour. Check out the Sydney Dance Company’s website for more information.
