After several years of tip-toeing around a long-time ‘Family Guy’ character’s sexuality, the show finally gets him to triumphantly come out.

A lot of the humour in older Family Guy episodes hasn’t aged particularly well, especially some of its dodgier LGBTQI+ and racial jokes. But it seems like Family Guy is doing its part in correcting that by having a long-time character come out of the closet in a triumphant (but still funny) way.

And no it’s not Stewie, he had his own coming out episode a few years ago.

The character in question is actually Bruce, the mustachioed supporting character who has been on the show since it began back in 1999 and is known for his high-pitched cries of “oh no!” as well as being the butt of countless gay jokes.

In the sixth episode of season 20(!) titled ‘Meg’s Wedding’, Meg is unable to find a date for the school dance so she and Bruce start dating, despite the rest of the family insisting that he is “obviously gay.”

At the insistence of his anti-LGBTQI+ parents to settle down, Bruce gets engaged to Meg. But she eventually catches onto what’s happening and encourages him to finally come out and say “I’m gay!”

As a cherry on top of this triumphant moment, Bruce ends up marrying his boyfriend Jeffrey (in a Walgreen’s carpark) with Peter officiating the ceremony.

This was quite a beautiful moment from a show that isn’t usually known for doing scenes like this and fans were quite pleased that Bruce got to come out and marry his boyfriend.

Having previously stated to TV Line that the show will “phase out” jokes about the LGBTQI+ community in the wake of changing norms amidst the Trump administration, it looks like the Family Guy showrunners are following through on their word and it’s just great to see.
