In December 2021, Australian company SX Global announced it had acquired the exclusive organisational and commercial rights to stage, manage and promote the newly conceived FIM Supercross World Championship.

Now, in another major development, SX Global – co-founded by Gold Coast Suns Chairman, Tony Cochrane – has inked a deal with Mubadala Capital, one of the world’s leading sovereign investors. Led by Mubadala’s head of equity, Adib Martin Mattar, the venture capital platform will become SX Global’s financial and global strategic partner.

Mubadala’s investment boosts Cochrane and co.’s aim to usher in a new, global era of supercross. “With the international reach, resources, and business building experience of Mubadala Capital alongside us, we’re looking forward to establishing FIM Supercross World Championship as a leading global motorsport and entertainment property,” Cochrane said in a statement.

Cochrane co-founded SX Global for the purpose of developing and promoting the FIM Supercross World Championship. FIM is the International Motorcycling Federation (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme), which oversees world championships in motocross, cross country, supermoto and various other motorcycle racing disciplines. Although similar to motocross – itself an off-road motorcycle racing format – supercross is distinguished by being held on constructed dirt tracks located within major sports stadia.

The pilot season of the FIM Supercross World Championship will launch in September 2022. Full details are yet to emerge, but SX Global has confirmed the pilot year will consist of five international events, before expanding the FIM World SX from 2023 onwards.

SX Global has also revealed they’ll be dishing out $USD250,000 of prize money at each individual event – the most capacious prize pool in the history of supercross. 10 team licenses are available to independent owners, with support of more than $USD50million available to teams and riders over five years.

“Proud day as SX Global becomes the very first Australian company to run globally either an FIM or an FIA World Motorsports Championship,” said Cochrane.
