If I could boil the suburb of Surry Hills down to one dessert, it would be this. Esteemed Sydney restaurant Firedoor has collaborated with cult gelato kings Gelato Messina on an Iced VoVo inspired dessert.
In the thick of the coronavirus pandemic, Firedoor unleashed Fireshop — an online market that provided Firedoor fiends with ‘almost-ready’ dishes, fresh produce and specialty goods curated by head chef Lennox Hastie and the rest of the Firedoor team.
The store was evidently a roaring success, as the offshoot is sticking around despite the restaurant being open to diners once more.
In addition to the succulent selection of fresh produce, each week Fireshop offers an opulent dinner box with a three-course menu for your at home enjoyment. Each one of these boxes include a one-off collaborative ice-cream with Gelato Messina.
Thus far, the dynamic duo have released a dulce de leche with beef fat gelato, a smoked-milk gelato with olive oil and sea salt gelato and a fire roasted hazelnut and salted caramel ripple gelato. This new flavour is arguably their greatest triumph. A posh as iteration of the the Iced VoVo — the god tier biscuit in the Arnott’s canon.
The half-litre tub is a perfect marriage of raspberry, toasted coconut, shortbread biscuit, and marshmallow. Aesthetically, it harks back to that iconic Freddo Frog ice-cream cake and I think that’s chic as hell.
You can order the half-litre tub for $19.50 or if you’re feeling particularly fun, flirty and frivolous with funds, cop the full three-course dinner box for $110.
